My Story

Hi, it's Ly Vu here :)

Career

Before designing products, I earned a Bachelor of Commerce from UBC Sauder School of Business and built experience in marketing and brand management — at UBC Sauder School of Business, Canada Green Building Council, and Modo. It shapes how I think about design: holistically, across every touchpoint.

Over the past 7 years, I've worked as a Product Designer across startups and small teams — leading 0→1 product work, running continuous discovery, and shipping across the full stack from strategy to polished UI. Most recently at MakerSights, I led design for an LLM-powered synthetic research product and owned most of the platform redesign, supporting renewals with brands like Adidas, The North Face, and HOKA.

I think about design strategically, with business outcomes in mind, and I'm comfortable moving fast when the situation calls for it.

Life

Outside of work, I'm an outdoor enthusiast — backcountry snowboarding in winter, rock climbing and hiking in summer. Both started only from my late 20s. Learning something from scratch keeps you humble and comfortable with being bad at things before you get good at them.

Living in Vietnam, Canada, and Italy, and traveling to 35+ countries, has taught me to navigate ambiguity, solve problems in unfamiliar contexts, and adapt fast.

That curiosity for a new challenge is what led me to build AvyLab — an avalanche judgment training platform for backcountry enthusiasts, tackling the decision-making gap that causes poor calls in the field. I'm building it solo, using agentic engineering workflows. Still figuring things out, but that's the point.
