Product Team Collaboration

As a person who loves collaboration and going deep into a product by gain new context of the business and users everyday, being part of a product team is such a rewarding experience for me. I have learnt so much through my close collaboration with software engineers, product manager, and designer. On top of that, I love the cross-functional collaboration with the leadership team, student success, marketing, and enrolment teams.

The Agile methodology we have been following is Scrum. We follow a 2-week sprint structure and we have the standard Scrum meetings such as sprint planning, backlog grooming, sprint kick-offs, and daily standup. I have a great opportunity to contribute to our product roadmap, work closely with the team to shape our product team processes such as writing product requirements, setting QA standards, setting designer-developer collaboration.

Product Design Process

As the first designer on the team, I own the end-to-end design process and define product design at GrantMe.

I created a design system from scratch to bring consistency to the product experience and improve efficiency for our design-development collaboration.

Essay Submission

Problem Definition

Our students rely on our essay editing service in order to improve their scholarship and university application writing. Therefore the essay submission is the most used service on our platform. The opportunity lies in improving the experience to be more efficient, delightful, and easy to use.

There are three problems we need to solve:

  • Inefficient essay submission workflow, especially around submitting a revision
  • 'No access' issue when students submit their own Google Doc link without giving us editing access
  • Usability issues with My Submission management

User Insights

I have a hard time knowing which essays I have submitted because all I see are the Google Docs links.
We have to edit 170+ essays a day and we can’t spend more than 15 minutes per essay.

The Final Solution

Based on the problems identified above, we worked together to define a better experience for our students and for the essay editing team.

  • Create the Google Docs for students and own the Docs so we can control the experience more.
  • Work with Zapier integration to send data between Trello and Drupal to manage essay submissions, display score and comments in the app.
